Challenge for cause A request from a party to a judge that a certain prospective juror not be allowed to be a member of a jury because of specified causes or reasons. (Also, see peremptory challenge.); Objection to the seating of a particular juror for a stated reason (usually bias or prejudice for or against one of the parties in the lawsuit). The judge has the discretion to deny the challenge. This differs from peremptory challenge. Peremptory Challenge A challenge that may be used to reject a certain number of prospective jurors without giving a reason.; Request by a party that a judge not allow a certain prospective juror as a member of the jury.
